Dog Sitting Can Be Helpful |
NOVEMBER 19, 2007 (POSTED BY: BANANABREAD)
If your family is trying to decide whether or not to buy a puppy, you may want to consider 'dog sitting' first. Looking after a dog for a week or two for family members, a neighbour or a friend could make your decision a whole lot easier!
If you have children and its the child or children who are driving you crazy for a cute little puppy, you should have them do most of the work with the dog you are looking after. It will show your child or children just how much work is involved and how much time and care a little canine friend needs.
After the novelty of buying a puppy wears off, children sometimes scouff at feeding, walking and brushing their new pet. But those care activities st...

Fall PD Days |
NOVEMBER 5, 2007 (POSTED BY: MIZ BIZ)
Even though it is November in Nova Scotia, parents and care providers can take advantage of our warm fall weather when children are not in school due to "PD" days.
I recently took my group of children on a field trip to a local lake. We packed sandwiches, notebooks, water jugs, a few treats and a camera and spent almost four hours hiking around Morris Lake in Dartmouth.
It really doesn't take much for children to be amused and engaged. Not to mention the exercise we received as we walked through marshland and climbed the rocky shoreline.
The weather was fantastic and the leaves shone in brilliant red, yellow and orange colours.
Not one child missed his or her computer games or ...

Short Soccer Season Success |
OCTOBER 16, 2007 (POSTED BY: BANANABREAD)
I love soccer. What can I say? It's a great, fast-paced sport that gives children lots of exercise. It's also what I call a 'reasonable' sport, which means two things: reasonably priced and reasonably non-aggressive.
The one down-side to soccer is the season is so short. Many children just seem to start getting the the groove of the game and then it's time for the August final tournament. There is a long, long break from the middle of August to the beginning of June of the next year.
My children and I have found the best cure for our soccer season blues! Our soccer club (along with many others) has what's called "Winter Skills" from October through to March. For the past two win...

Home with Homework |
OCTOBER 13, 2007 (POSTED BY: BANANABREAD)
Now that school is back in and parents can form daily routines with their children for meals, bedtimes, extra curricular activities and the like, the big question is what do they do about the mounds of homework?
It seems that no matter what grade level children are in, homework levels have increased to the point that many parents wonder if they are running a home school program. There are many reasons for children to partake in homework. There will always be homework. But why so much and when will the children get it all done?
Is it better to do the homework right after school? What about the children who go to after school programs where there is no structure or supervision for hom...

Buskers too Educational for Kids? |
JULY 3, 2007
I’ve just been perusing the 21st Halifax International Busker Festival website (August 10-18, 2007)- http://www.buskers.ca/.
Many of the acts in this year’s line-up have been confirmed. I noticed a few familiar names - acts that were here last year.
It will be fun to see them again, for sure. They’re wildly talented and entertaining, no doubt about it.
Many acts are also very educational for kids … some of them a wee bit too educational, if you get my drift.
I know that it’s all about fun, and it’s a downer to have to be critical but … as a Mom I sometimes have to be. I have to say that, if there are kids in the crowd, the performers should keep the tone and content of the perfor...

Curious Kids Ask Cool Questions |
JULY 3, 2007
Since becoming a Mom, I’ve been amazed at the way kids think.
The very forthright and literal way in which children view the world is sometimes wacky, always wonderful, and often more than a little intimidating.
I’ve always felt that this fresh and innocent viewpoint is most often best expressed through the questions that children ask.
Sometimes the queries that spill from small mouths are tactless but relevant. For instance, my youngest son - while speaking to my husband one day - suddenly piped up, “When I grow up, will I have hair in my nose?”
(And yes, he went to check).
Other questions prove that these little creatures are constantly in the process of trying to figure out...

Jump Into June |
JULY 3, 2007
I've recently gotten into the habit of writing a little piece at the beginning of each month- something that will outline some of the more well known or interesting observances and events that each month represents or holds.
In writing about June, I first want to explain why this particular month holds a special significance for me…
Six years ago, while standing at the sink washing a frying pan, I suddenly began to see three of everything out of my left eye. My left leg would no longer support my weight, and, even to save my life, I couldn’t have told you where my left arm had gone to.
(You don’t even want to hear about the headache I experienced).
Three hours later, when the doctor ...
