MYLES DECK
Beware! The Fuzz
Submitted by Trevor Murphy on 11.11.07 at 7:41pm.
When he decided to call his new album “Beware! The Fuzz,” Myles Deck probably wouldn’t have guessed that this ominous warning might be taken so literally by the members of his own band.
Earlier this year, shortly before what was slated to be their first tour, the bass player in Deck’s backup band The Fuzz left the band to go to school. Now, on the cusp of his album release and what was supposed to be another crack at touring, the other half of Deck’s rhythm section is in need of replacement.
“Right now, our drummer is looking at taking off to go out West to work for a bit,” Deck says. “We have a replacement drummer to do some local shows (Lance Purcell, current A History Of, ex-The Plan drummer), but he’s pretty tied down, so he can’t go away for long periods of time.”
With the inability to tour to support the band’s first full-length LP – at least for the time being - Myles Deck & The Fuzz have looked to other means of making sure their music gets heard, including offering it up as a free download on their record label’s website (see link at the bottom of this article), and releasing it as a 12 inch vinyl.
“I got into collecting records a couple years ago,” Deck says. “I liked the sound of a lot of the old punk rock and blues rock stuff I listened to, so I thought releasing the album on vinyl would be a good idea.”
A drummer by trade (currently in Joyless Streets, and once upon a time in Hellacaust),
Deck’s brand of energy-infused punk mixed with the grit of southern rock and a little bit of country suits the vinyl tone well. The album, recorded in Halifax at Echo Chamber Audio with Andrew Gillis, was tracked live off the floor for the most part helping to capture the raw, straight-up sound Deck was looking for.
On songs like “Banshee Woman” and “Halifax is Burning,” the voracity of the live band shines.
“Everything was done in two or three takes with minimal overdubs,” says Deck.
Myles Deck & The Fuzz’s LP “Beware! The Fuzz” is officially being released – both on CD and on vinyl – this Saturday, November 17 at The Attic in Halifax, NS. The band will be opening for Toronto’s White Cowbell Oklahoma, a nine-piece down-and-dirty southern rock band known for their outrageous live performances.
“We know what we’re up against,” says Deck. “We’ve been working pretty hard, but we’ve got our work cut out for us.”
