The screen door of the green farmhouse on Carrington Road in Port Howe is open, letting bright March sunshine splash onto the floor inside. As I raise my hand to knock, I don’t hear the sound of drums or a guitar; I hear unmelodious clattering.

Coat color
Submitted by Hidden Meadow Farm blog on 04.10.12 at 9:10am.
I thought a few post on Highland coat color would be interesting for you to read about.
There are many colors and variations on these.
I will start with calf color.
There are some very interesting coat color changes that occur in Highland calves.
With a new crop of babies with some new intere...

In This Week's Issue
Submitted by Field Notes From Cumberland County blog on 04.10.12 at 8:35am.
My conversation this week is with a couple who run a small-scale farm -- four horses, two cows, two goats, a flock of hens, one peacock, two dogs, several cats...and one pig.
One very lovely, very large, very motherly pig.

A Canadian Werewolf
Submitted by Flandrum Hill on 04.5.12 at 7:44am.
Although wolves were made extinct in much of Eastern Canada in the 1800s, there may still be wolf-like creatures prowling our woods at night, especially under the light of a full moon. When I was a child, my French-Canadian grandmother would warn me about the dangers of staying outside after dar...

Strong as an Ox
Submitted by Hidden Meadow Farm blog on 04.4.12 at 8:55am.
A long time ago when we first started farming with Highland cattle we really wanted our very own team of oxen.
We waited every year for the perfect pair of matching bull calves that we could team.
Every year we had no boys that matched until this year!
Last Wednesday Lysa gave us a black bull ...

A Morning Walk
Submitted by Little Homestead in the Valley on 04.3.12 at 9:08am.
It was warm this morning so we took a little nature walk around the property. I took a few photos along the way.
Found some duck eggs.
Of course Tootsie had to come with us.

Ticked Off
Submitted by Field Notes From Cumberland County blog on 04.3.12 at 8:43am.
My friend Jane says she found a tick on her ten-month-old dog, Sam, over the weekend. It was under his collar, a good place to hide.
Jane and Sam, along with me and my two dogs, went for a long walk into our back woods last week. Watching 9-year-old Stella doing her usual ignoring-my-owner-doing...

Playing
Submitted by Hidden Meadow Farm blog on 04.2.12 at 8:46am.
For the first time in nearly a year I got to take my mare out and play in my ring.
Hubby harrowed the ring, made it all fluffy and it was such fun.
Baby girl had her first tractor ride with daddy!
I'm hoping the nice weather keeps up so I can keep working with her.

the bunny dragon
Submitted by Days Go By on 04.2.12 at 7:43am.
Most of the time we call Bear's bus 'Dragon'. (Well, what would you call it? And it has an odd shaped vent on the side hood like a snarling mouth.) But for this week? It's name is Bunny.

eyes of a hawk
Submitted by Dream Big on 03.30.12 at 7:58am.
On Wednesday I was puttering in the backyard, looking at the hopeful signs of spring in the garden. I heard a strange bird sound that I had never heard before. I looked towards the sound, which was coming from our "rock island" (a huge pile of rocks in the centre of the field, picked by hand and ...

I Still Have My Hopes
Submitted by Flandrum Hill on 03.30.12 at 7:57am.
These times make it all too easy to want to give up and give in to despair. The world is a mess. We care too much for personal comfort and inanimate things that are all important one minute and discarded the next. We care too little for life in its many forms, the soil, water and one another. ...

dozens of finches
Submitted by Dream Big on 03.29.12 at 7:58am.
Our birds are back a little earlier this year. Or maybe we're just seeing more earlier because we loaded up the feeders earlier than usual. We have dozens of finches...just a small sample shown here. The purple finches have arrived too, but I haven't caught one yet.

Take It Outside
Submitted by Flandrum Hill on 03.29.12 at 7:55am.
Are kids testing the limits of your patience? Perhaps you’re feeling cooped up with a baby who won’t settle down for a nap, a whining toddler or older children who are arguing incessantly. If so, maybe it’s time to take it outside.

Oh deer, foxy lady
Submitted by Dream Big on 03.28.12 at 7:49am.
I have the best husband in the world. For two days last week, we fought about whether I should buy a new lens for my camera or not. He was insisting that we buy the lens, I was thinking it wasn't the right time (visions of dollar signs dancing in my head). He won the battle, and we headed into Ha...

We spent our first day with Ms. Flat, Flat Stella, Flat Luke and Flat Chris at home on the farm. First, we introduced them to our dog Riley and our kitten Myrtle. Myrtle loves Riley and they play and sleep together. Our other dog Mulligan was busy sleeping.

March Waters
Submitted by Flandrum Hill on 03.26.12 at 8:03am.
Spring sometimes takes one step forward and two steps backwards…
But this spring’s steps forward and backwards seem more extreme than in the past. How can I be finding refreshment in the waters of the Atlantic one hot day, and soon afterwards be wondering if I should thaw the water in the bird...

The Heat is On
Submitted by Flandrum Hill on 03.22.12 at 7:34am.
This morning it looked like a hot summer sun was rising on the horizon. The 25.7 degrees Celsius high yesterday in Halifax broke the previous record by 15 degrees! (That’s a 59 degree Fahrenheit DIFFERENCE). In 1979, temperatures here on March 21st reached 10 degrees Celsius.

Spring Fling
Submitted by Get Out In Guysborough County on 03.22.12 at 7:14am.
My first day of spring was great. I managed to spend a good chunk of it outdoors. I went for a ride on the motorcycle, walked and later in the evening went cycling.
When I left home I intended to go for a short ride to Guysborough for milk and gas but on the way home I decided to keep going on R...

on the first day of spring
Submitted by Twenty-Two Pleasant on 03.21.12 at 8:52am.
For some reason, I'm awake at 3:30am, with a tickle in my throat and a headache that just won't let me get back to sleep. I've posted in this sleepless condition before. Rather than trying to share anything profound tonight, here's what's been in my head for the past few days:

The Dawn of a New Season of Climate Change
Submitted by Flandrum Hill on 03.21.12 at 7:49am.
It’s getting warmer. And despite Canadians’ delight at enjoying higher temperatures than normal this week, some of us can’t help but wonder about the dark cloud that’s presently revealing this silver lining.

Spring has sprung
Wow we are having a doozy of a couple of days. Today the temps are supposed to reach summer levels! 25C/78F I will enjoy it but it does kind of freak me out. Temps back to near freezing on the weekend. The orchard growers are nervous because the trees might start blooming with all this mild and w...
