How not to end up up with the mayor we least want

Perhaps Halifax should adopt a kinder, gentler version of the American cage match, survival-of-the-sleaziest primary system to winnow our choices for mayor. Or maybe we need to consider some variation of the NDP's upcoming advance preferential leadership balloting system to determine who we most—... Read More.

GUEST BLOG: Now they all want to live here, and she’s supposed to go – by Lisa Roberts

“For years, no one wanted to live in this community. Now they all want to live here.”
That’s what one older black woman had to say at the end of a community meeting held in Cornwallis Street Baptist Church on Saturday.
The unstated corollary: And so she’s supposed to go.

Sunday View

This was last Sunday's view from the market windows as I was packing up to go. That is George's Island with some old fortifications and beyond it Dartmouth. Plans are in the works to make it a historic park. You can see an oil rig in for refit to the left of the island. Read More.

Atlantic Snapshots – Retro Prince and Vintage Market

Lately I have been looking at “snapshots” I took of downtown Halifax about 1967. It made me realize that for most of my life there have been big holes as lots were cleared and remained empty for years and sometimes decades. These not very clear pictures show the corner of Prince and Market Street... Read More.

Responding to Town Square

The process by which Rank Inc.’s new business super-complex, Nova Centre, was approved by HRM Council has lacked significant public input since its early stages of development in 2005. The investment of over $50 million dollars per government has, over the last year, prompted community interest g... Read More.

City council stumbles… again, always

The lesson from last week’s reversal of council’s decision to sell the former St. Patrick’s-Alexandra school to a private developer? It’s Africville All Over Again

“It is Africville all over again,” Reverend Rhonda Britton said at City Hall after council voted to approve the sale of St. Patrick’s-Alexandra school, in the heart of Central Halifax, to a developer.
That’s a hard thing for residents of Halifax Regional Municipality to hear, judging from letter...

Bitches be trippin' if you take their parking space

Over the last few weeks a problem facing expectant mothers in Halifax and the parents of young children has been brought to light.

Not “Africville all over again”… not yet

Rev. Rhonda Britten may have been guilty of hyperbole when she compared last week’s city council decision to sell the former St. Patrick’s-Alexandra School to a local developer to “the rape... of a community… Africville all over again!”

McChristmas Mcmorning

Good news, Big Mac fans. If you get a hankerin' for some McD's over the holidays, fear not! Beacuase your local McDonald's will be open every day.

OT: The stupidest thing HRM Council has ever talked about

I have by time talked about dog politics as it relates to HRM Council on this blog - and I felt compelled to say something about the foolishness that's currently going on at Council about the naming of the "Oval" and whether or not the city should take sponsor money from a beer company.

Memorials

Ninety-four years ago, Halifax was a major shipping port in the British war effort. Ships from Canada and the US would steam into Halifax every week, in advance of an Atlantic convoy. "He gave up being a police officer, but he didn't give up the
